Things to do immediately with a fresh install of Microsoft Word

  • MS WORD How to disable Ctrl+PageDown/up going to next search result
    • This way Ctrl+PageUp and Ctrl+PageDown will always neatly jump to each new page break. Useful if you have a monitor in portrait mode.
  • How can I change text color via keyboard shortcut in MS word 2010
    • I like using Alt+1 as black, Alt+2 as red, and Alt+3 as green.
  • Disable smart quotes
    • File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options  > AutoFormat As You Type > Replace as you type > uncheck all
  • Disable keep ellipses as three dots instead of one character
    • File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options > AutoCorrect tab > Replace text as you type > delete the entry (hit period three times)
  • Disable double dashes turning back into one
    • File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options > AutoCorrect tab > Replace text as you type > uncheck Hyphens (--) with dash (-)
  • Disabling track changes completely
    • More specifically, the keyboard shortcut to toggle track changes. Because this can really, really mess you up.
  • Disable paste option popup
    • These annoying little bastards interfere with my AutoHotkey scripts and I've never, ever needed them.
    • File > Options > Advanced > Cut, copy, and paste > uncheck: Show Paste Options button when content is pasted

Now if anyone can tell me how to hit the little X to close out the Ctrl+F search, that would be swell. Currently I have Ctrl+J as an AutoHotkey macro that moves and clicks, but that's not elegant...

Fixing a Pronto TSU 3000, and other resources

  • Post 95 (2005-08-19) - First post on a fix
  • Post 120 (2005-09-17) - Refrigerator fix?
  • Post 134 (2005-10-04) - Cleaning the contacts on the cable and metal strips with a pencil eraser
  • Post 142 (2005-10-14) - Spraying elekrospray on contacts
  • Post 182 (2006-05-31) - Just pressing on the two plastic connectors works
  • Post 203 (2006-07-26) - "If the touchscren is not reponding the ribbon cable lost the contact with the touchscreen panel. If you rub it it maybe work but is it will problaby lost contact again. I notice in my pronto only the second contact was broken (4 contacts). I also notice 3 holes on the board in front of the ribon (these were used in old 3000 to put the IR learn reciver). So I solded an hard wire (from a resistence of an eletric shower) in a way it will mantain pressure on the contact. It´s ugly but Is working for now."
  • Post 205 (2006-08-01) - "Guys, try to fold the ribon cable of the touchscreen. This is fixing the problem in some cases."
  • Post 210 (2006-08-15) - "CLEAN THE SCREEN - I mean really clean the screen. You need to take off the blue cover and clean the edge of the screen."
  • Post 220 (2006-09-04) - "Mine died today. After reading this thread, I found that pressing the blue plastic frame to the right of the "pronto" logo got the screen working again. So I'm expecting that the puncture-the-contacts-with-a-needle trick will resolve this issue until those contacts corrode." (also Post 246)
  • Post 222 (2006-09-18) - "Well, after about a year (see my post #134 in this thread), my touchscreen has quit again. I tried cleaning the contacts again on the two side connectors, cleaning the metal strip at the top and bottom of the screen and using contact cleaner. Nothing seemed to work this time with the exception of the tip from fransvdmb about using a needle to prick the four contacts on the top right connector on the screen. That did the trick. Obviously the method Philips is using to connect the ribbon to the screen is inferior."
  • Post 230 (2007-02-06) - "It still works after 8 months" / "Do not buy a contact cleaner, but a needle!" / "Puncture with "force" each contact spot 4 times."
  • Post 233 (2007-03-31) - "The problem is with the motherboard. There is a chip that makes the layer under the screen to turn fluorescent. After some years of use the chip loses his strenth. I was able to put LED light from Ipaqs int the two 3000s."
  • Post 260 (2007-06-26) - "Ok, Here is swhat I did to fix my Pronto. I disassembled the unit. I completely removed the LCD screen, I CAREFULLY removed the black protective tape from the back of the display and with the aid of a microscope and small soldering iron , I reflowed the solder on the flexible circuit conductor. Before I started I looked for fractured solder joints but I could not find any. They had to be there but I was not able to see them. I'll let you know how this works out, but right now the Pronto is working better than it has for sometime. It had been sluggish for a month or so." (But Post 261 says this won't do)
  • Post 269 (2007-07-19) - "Updated procedure" / "with a fine sewing needle with a sharp tip. And the screen works fine now. I have now a 12 month experience of successful operation since the repair."
  • Post 275 (2007-08-28) - "It seems that over time the surface of this join decays and stabbing the area with a pin disturbs the 2 layers enough to renew the contacts. Chances are this will happen again, but for anyone attempting it, you just need open the case. You can leave the touch screen assembly attached to the main circuit board. The area to prod the flexi is on the top surface of the screen before it turns 90 degrees and disappears down under the screen."
  • Post 277 (2007-08-31)"You DONT need to desolder the screen and remove it.......its the ONLY ribbon that is glued to the top front of the glass screen....the one that connects to strips running around the touch screen....just take a tiny flat head and push down on each part of the strip where it connects to the glass. Not the ribbon that goes under the glass......its the ribbon that is glued right to the glass at the top right of the screen."
  • Post 283 (2007-09-27) - Detailed instructions for taking off the blue/green plastic part, pictures
  • Post 288 (2007-10-16) - "Take the screen out of the main board, pull the black plastic covering the contacts on the back of the screen, unsolder the touchscrren ribon, solder 4 wires in the back of the screen, glue the 4 wires in the touchsreen w/ conductive epoxy, paint will not hold."
  • Post 296 (2007-11-04)"I sealed the indentations with CAIG Pro-Gold, just in case corrosion would be a factor later."
  • Post 303 (2007-12-06) "Just wanted to say thanks for reminding me of this. Just cured a tsu3000 that was all messed up. Your info reminded me that when i took the unit apart i did notice that on the back of the lcd panel (on my model you can't seperate the lcd part from the circuit board without desoldering 3 points, which i didn't want to mess with) the 4 contact ribbon did seem to be 'seperating' a little from being what appeared to be 2 layers of other material. seems the issue was that the glue that held all 3 layers weakened over time and allowed the touchscreen circuits to not make full contact anymore. I put in a some material between the circuit board and the 3 layeres to compress the 3 layers together and give it pressure and the unit worked perfectly after that. THANKS!"
  • Post 318 (2008-08-16) - "You have the touchscreen problem, eventually It will stop working completely. Solution: new touchscreen or replace the ribon for wires using a silver based glue,"
  • Post 355 (2011-09-27) - "A few years ago, I had this same problem. I fixed it by removing the touchscreen flexi, soldering 4 mod wires on to the main flexi, then I fixed them onto the touchscreen using epoxy. I then used conductive paint to make a connection between the wires & the silver tracks on the touchscreen."

Other thoughts:

I bought mine for $15.24 shipped and I needed to do this fix -- twice, actually, because poking the contacts through the ribbon cable didn't work the first time.

Right now these remotes are very affordable on eBay, and according to one post, it is worth getting the charger. I didn't, though, and I regret it.
