So, I donated blood today...

[ORIGINAL POST]

Current mood:accomplished

...And it's all thanks to Penn Jillette and Penn Radio. Saving lives is a nice bonus, I suppose, but I really wanted to say that I donated blood for the three reasons Penn Jillette listed:

1. You get to brag about it. (Heck, that's why I logged in!)

2. You get the moral high ground in any argument.

3. If you walk into bar or any place where there are women and they see your arm bandaged from giving blood, they'll totally want to have sex with you (since you can only give blood if you're "clean").

Of course, like Penn Jillette (and partially because of Penn Jillette), I don't drink or smoke and never will. Tattoos are also a no-no if you ever want to be a blood donor.

So what was the actual experience like? I thought it would take ten minutes, but it ended up taking an hour and a half, so I missed my chance to watch something for class. I did get all the chips and juice that I could carry.

I'm not afraid of needles, and I can view blood without fainting, but actually seeing the blood go through the tube freaked me out a bit. Once it was going, I felt better, but I couldn't quite get my mind off the fact that my life force was literally being sucked out of me.

It was probably more painful than it had to be since I was freezing, which I believe just made the whole ordeal longer. But I got a shirt and some piece of paper (which I might end up framing or put in a binder), so it was all good.

If I could get bone marrow typed at school, I'd probably show up for that too!
